Keeping Philadelphia Dance Vibrant

Now in its 31st year, Susan Hess Modern Dance fosters explorations of past and present in the local dance community and nurtures the professional development of independent dance artists. We encourage investigations in all philosophies and modes of contemporary dance – from Butoh to Breaking, Contact Improvisation to Tanztheater – emphasizing the artists’ dedication to their craft, expansion of their vision, and application of judgment to their work. It is our mission to serve emerging and professional choreographers, dancers, performance artists, and audiences in an environment where creativity and experimentation flourish.

SHMD’s core programs are:

  • The Choreographers Project, a residency program for independent choreographers
  • The Masters Exchange, a workshop series with established dance and performance artists
  • In Performance, a presentation series featuring local, national, and international performers across disciplines

All material was documented in the Hess Studio at 2030 Sansom Street, which saw the final In Performance: Choreographers Project showing on May 23, 2010.
